The Inside Story – Jean Dudley

I refer to myself as an outdoor or En Plein Air painter.  However, Saskatchewan has its challenges for this kind of painting. I’ve been a member of Artists’ Workshop for almost a decade and every year I struggle during the winter months. I have always resisted painting from photographs, but this winter I am giving it a serious try.  The jury is still out on whether or not I will find some success with this.  Luckily my studio is on the cool side. Painting pictures of snow in my long johns, turtleneck, flannel shirt and sweater doesn’t feel quite as foreign as dreaming of images of summer days. I still miss Kenderdine Campus and have looked for alternatives with little success. Going away to paint for a week with like-minded people always moved me forward in my work. Something about the dedicated focus I don’t achieve in my regular life with all its distractions.
