The Inside Story – Paige Mortensen

Many artists will tell you that they have been an artist for as long as they can remember. Not me. My interest early in life was definitely math and science.  At the same time there were crafts. Over the years I have tried many: crocheting, tatting, leather craft, paper crafts, cross stitch and embroidery, sewing, etc.

It wasn’t until much later that I picked up a paintbrush. Around the beginning for the 2000’s I took many folk art style classes. These projects were like many of the crafts, there were patterns and step by step instructions. It was great for a while and I learned a lot of skills and techniques so I am thankful for that time. However after a while I knew I needed to go in my own direction.

Next came the Certificate in Art & Design from the University of Saskatchewan. I really enjoyed the exposure to such a wide range of mediums and techniques. One thing I learned about myself was that it was really hard for me to let go of this very precise way of working with acrylics and watercolour. I needed to let go of that precision and loosen up. I needed to find a new way of working.

In 2012 I discovered the watercolour batik process. It combines a structured, scientific process with the total unpredictability of wax and watercolour on Ginwashi paper. I can have a plan and then I have to let go and see what happens. There is an element of precision and at the same time space for creativity to guide what happens.

Interestingly life has brought me back to geometry. Not in the sense of calculations and actual numbers, rather with a compass and straight edge. It is hard to describe the inner calm that can come with the simple act of spinning circles.  The patterns that emerge are comforting and I can get lost in the process. This is nature’s language and now feels like the time to explore what it is telling me.
