My story is of one who was born and raised on a farm on the prairies. I weave together themes of vast landscapes, color saturated sunsets, lakes, solitude, space, and an intimate connection to the land. The prairies and big skies aren’t just a backdrop but an essential part of my identity, driving my artistic expression.
Being part of the prairies is a different kind of experience. It’s the wide, uninterrupted spaces that stretch to the horizon. The prairies have a way of making you feel both small and connected to the world around you. The constantly changing sky—shifting from pale blue to stormy grey, or the brilliant colours of a setting sun—becomes a kind of emotional landscape, shaping moods and perspectives.
I paint to depict the play of light and shadow over the rolling fields, the endless horizon, the intricate patterns of the land, and the stunning skies. Color is key in prairie landscape painting—whether it’s the billowing white clouds, the golden yellow of a canola field, or the deep blues and greys of an approaching storm. These pictures are deeply ingrained in my mind and soul. My desire to paint big skies and landscapes is about my relationship with the land, and the joy I feel when paintings these familiar places.Other words to describe synergy are partnership, cooperation, kinship, and teamwork. These are also words we can identify with in our group because when we create together or prepare for a show, all of these pieces become part of our art making.
